There are two reasons

1. Urethane doesn't absorb oil like a reactive ball does. It just carries it down, effectively moving oil to the back end of the lane. Can make the lanes play like a much longer shot, preventing reactive balls from moving when they should.

2. On the other side, it can seem to make the game "too easy." Urethane has a very controllable, smooth motion that isn't nearly as impacted by oil conditions. For casual bowlers, that can take some difficulty of understanding the lanes out of the equation.
